The Night before Donald Trump's Inauguration
for Michelle Obama
It rains. I think of my
Lettuces in the dark, liking
The drench, knowing 'forehand
The shapes of their leaves
40 years ago, while a college
Student in Ohio, I wrote
About Jimmy Carter's
Inaugural. He lives
Still, teaches scripture,
Made a difference in the
Middle East, beat brain cancer
Arugula, if you let it
Grow too long, gets
Bitter. And all will bolt
Once the weather gets hot
My lettuces give
Nourishment,
Leaf by leaf,
Green and amber
And frilly
Mr. Trump probably
Got the nuclear codes
Tonight. They are in
His pocket
I've got seeds in mine

that is a beautiful poem. Thank you. We all have to start planting seeds together, to grow a new world, because this one definitely has bolted.
